Light Foundation Condemns Islamophobia Following Terror Attack at San Diego Mosque

Islamophobia continues to deeply affect Muslim communities around the world. The terror attack at the Islamic Center of San Diego, which is also connected to a school where children were present at the time, is a painful reminder of the devastating impact of hatred, extremism, and dehumanising rhetoric.

The individuals involved were later found dead in a vehicle from self-inflicted wounds, with Nazi imagery and weapons inscribed with hate speech.

This incident comes amid ongoing concerns about Islamophobic rhetoric, including statements made at the recent “Unite the Kingdom” rally in London involving Tommy Robinson, where calls for Muslims to “leave this country” and to “stop Islam” have been widely condemned for deepening division and hostility.

History shows that rhetoric targeting communities based on religion or identity can contribute to fear, discrimination, and violence. We call for understanding, compassion, education, and collective action against all forms of hate.

Our hearts are with the victims, their families, and everyone affected by this distressing situation. We stand in solidarity with Muslim community of San Diego and all those impacted. 

We are also in contact with Lancashire Constabulary to support community reassurance and safety during these anxious times, and call on Mosques, Muslim schools and education centres to respectfully review their own security measures.
